Act #789 of the legislature states that all girls only in public high schools shall be taught the proper procedure for breast self-examination and the need for an annual Pap test for cervical cancer. This will be taught under rules and regulations adopted by the school board.

Classes have been organized to teach girls during high school health classes. A female school nurse will teach each class with the use of a Power Point Presentation and a model. Live models will not be used at any time.

The Jeff Davis Parish Department of Special Services believes that it is best practice for all boys in public high schools to have the opportunity to be taught the proper procedure for testicular self- examination.

Classes have been organized to teach boys only during high school health classes. A school nurse will teach each class with the use of a Power Point Presentation and models. Live models will not be used at any time.

Parents/Guardians of the students involved in this program are invited to view the Power Point Presentation that can accessed on the Jefferson Davis Parish website. Please help us implement a program that will be of benefit to you and your child.

A student shall not be required to take instruction if the parent/guardian signs and returns this form indicating that such information conflicts with the religious beliefs of the student. If this form is not returned to us with your signature, your son will receive the instruction.

Teletherapy Program for ALL Students

Our district has partnered with Daybreak Health, a school-based mental health company, to offer 1:1 teletherapy services to our students and their families, with qualified clinicians. These services will be provided at no cost to families.

If a student is struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship challenges, stress, or other mental health related issues, they can get referred to this program, have an intake appointment, and get matched with a therapist based on their individual needs within 1-2 weeks. The student will meet with their therapist once/week for 50-minutes over ~12 weeks. All sessions are hosted over Zoom and can take place before, during or after school hours, during the week or even on Saturdays.

During the program, the student’s therapist will help them understand their emotions and learn new skills and strategies to manage their symptoms that they can use in class, at home, and throughout their life.

Students ages 5-9 will participate in a Family Teletherapy program that includes at least one parent or guardian. Older students will participate in a 1:1 Teletherapy program.

If your child could benefit from virtual mental health support click here to make a referral, or reach out to your school counselor, social worker, or building administrators for more information.
