Jefferson Davis Parish School Closure Updates
Message from Superintendent, Kirk Credeur
March 19, 2020
It is our sincerest wish that this pandemic phenomenon quickly dissipates, we resume school on April 20, 2020, and close the 2019-2020 school year with as much normalcy as possible for our students. When we return to school on April 20, 2020, we will take every advantage of making sure our students are exposed to the critical and essential skills necessary for mastering required academic grade expectations. Classroom instructional time is very important, and we will take full advantage of it when we return. We anticipate having graduations and other important end-of-school traditions and co-curricular programs as scheduled. We do understand that there will be some end-of-school activities such as field trips or teacher professional development activities that will be cancelled due to the reduced time with students.
Because of the uncertainty about how this virus will manifest itself in Southwest Louisiana, we unfortunately have to be patient and flexible in our decision making. We are currently discussing school district actions in case of worst-case scenarios, but this is only being done as an exercise for preparedness. We do not want anyone to panic or overreact but to follow the advice and directions of local health officials.
We have taken steps to initiate thorough, deep cleaning of all our school sites and school buses for when students return. We will continue to stress good personal hygiene such as covering your mouth when you cough, social distancing as necessary, and the importance of thorough and frequent hand washing.
The school board has asked that we implement a feeding program for students in this time of school shut down. We will implement feeding programs at Elton High, Jennings High, and Union Baptist in Jennings, Welsh Elementary and Lake Arthur Elementary beginning Monday, March 23, 2020. We will advertise these lunch “grab and go” spots through callouts, Facebook, and our Website.
Please stay safe, and I will continue to update you with information as I receive it.
