On Friday, August 9, 2019, the students of Jefferson Davis Parish will return to school for the 2019 - 2020 school session. This will be my third opening of a new school year as a superintendent and I am very proud of what we as a school system have and continue to achieve. Two years ago we experienced unprecedented academic and athletic success and we continue to improve upon those successes every year. A year ago we earned the highest academic district performance score we have ever earned from the state and it appears from all preliminary results that we will surpass that mark with the most recent testing conducted last spring. Jefferson Davis Parish did exceed the state’s average LEAP 25 index in Math grades 3-8, ELA grades 3-7, and Social Studies grades 4-8. We also exceeded the state’s End of Course average index in Algebra I, Geometry, and English I, II, and III.
We currently rank as the second best district in the state for graduation cohort rates and preschool performances and we also experience some of the lowest discipline rates in the state.
We have experienced more teams/individuals earn state athletic championships than any time in recent history. Last year we experienced a girls’ basketball championship with the Elton High School team, a boy’s state championship swimmer at Jennings High, a state boy’s golf championship team from Hathaway High and an individual state girl’s golf champ from Lacassine High School. Welsh High School was also a state runner-up in football.
We are very excited that the Jennings community has entrusted in us the responsibility to build them a beautiful new elementary school. The Jennings community overwhelmingly voted to support a millage and continuation of a sales tax to make a new elementary school a reality and we are currently moving “full speed ahead” to bring that project to fruition. We understand the serious responsibility of this task and we look forward to the challenge.
The Elton community will go to the polls this November to decide their future improvements to their schools. We are eagerly anticipating the direction the community wants us to pursue.
Our teachers and support staff are among the best in the state, and we are very fortunate to have each and every one of them. We accept the challenge of elevating an already great system and commit to improving it to the best of our abilities. Good luck to all of our students, faculty, and staff as the new school year begins and we look forward to providing assistance to all in order achieve our goals.
